Sports Personality of the Year

Last night Joe Calzaghe battered Roy Jones Jr in what I hope will be a fairytale end to his career.  He doesn’t need to do anything else.  You may remember he won Sport Personality of the Year 2007 and this victory (making his record 45-0 I think) surely puts him in the running once again.  But what a year of individual(!) sporting success Great Britain has had, Calzaghe has a lot of competition.

The first name that springs to mind is Lewis Hamilton.  His 5th place last weekend brought him many historic records – in particular the fact he is the youngest ever Formula 1 champion and that he has now become not only the first black driver but also the first black world champion.

Andy Murray has had some awe inspiring moments this year.  In particular that point against Richard Gasquet at Wimbledon where he almost ran off the court and his back to back Masters Tournament victories later in the year.

And then there are the seemingliy countless worthy heroes from the Olympics.  The top three have to be:

  • double gold winning swimmer Rebecca Adlington
  • Chris Hoy, who won three cycling golds this year
  • and Ben Ainslie, who won his third gold in three Olympics in sailing.

My picks among the most inspiring of the rest are Tim Brabants (Canoeing), Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton and Nicole Cook (Cycling), Christine Ohuruogu (Athletics) and David Davies (Swimming).

It has been great to experience all this success this year and I have loved the limelight being shifted away from Rugby, Cricket and of course Football.  I’d be interested in your comments.  And if you can’t be bothered to write anything at least click on who you think should win!

  1. I think Ben Ainslie is an inspiration to all junior sailors. In a couple of years time young people could be going to the 2012 Olympics and saying Ben Ainslie is their role model.
