What does the Sabbath mean for us today?

No answers just hoping for a little discussion and a few ideas….

The fourth commandment says, “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy…”  It continues to say that God’s people should work for six days and must rest on the seventh day of each week.

But what does the Sabbath mean for us today?  As a society we are a long way from having a communal sitdown as the nation of Israel would have had each week.  But how can the Church, the people of God, remember the Sabbath?  How do we keep it holy?  And what is the Sabbath day anyway – Saturday?  Sunday?  Something else entirely?

Any thoughts…?

  1. The Sabbath is the last thing God created. Notice there is no opening or closing time period placed on the Seventh day in which God rested. There is no beginning and/or end to that day, such as “the morning and the evening was the first day” or morning and evening was the second day, and ETC ETC ETC. It is simply “And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done” and “Then God blessed the seventh day and santified it because in it He rested from all His work which He had done”. Gen 2:2-3,
God later told the Israelites at Mt Sinai “Remember the sabbath to keep it holy”. He did tell them not to work on the seventh day, that command was added later, by an Angel and by the mediator Moses. The seventh day of creation has not ended, it continues to this very day because God is still creating “even though the “WORKS” were finished from the foundation of the world, there remains a rest for the people of God”. Read Hebrews 3:7-19 and 4:1-11. Then read Matthew 11:28-30 and 12:1. Jesus is the New Tetsament sabbath, He is our eternal rest. every day of the week, month, and year is a sabbath in Christ. The sabbath is not a day, it is the christian rest in Christ. The seventh day was created when God rested from all the works he had made, that is to say the physical creation of all physical things He had made. God is now creating the spiritual, there are yet to be born other christians and that is to say other people in Christ–although the “works were finished from the foundation of the world”. The seventh day of creation has been at least 6,000 years long. Far longer than a mere 24 hour solar or calender day. The sabbath continues and it will continue until Christ returns and then we can ask God “Whats Next?” 🙂
